"Middle Eastern Petrochemical Industry 2009"
-New Plant Boom and Competitiveness amid Turbulent Era-

In recent years, Saudi Arabia and its fellow Middle Eastern oil-producing nations have been trying to diversify their industrial structures as they seek to reduce their dependencies on oil exports. In this respect, high hopes are held for the petrochemical industry in particular due to the competitiveness of the region's abundant supply of low-cost feedstocks. The petrochemical industry has been pushing forward with aggressive expansion that has included foreign investment in joint ventures, and its presence in the global petrochemical arena continues to grow year by year.

Trends in the Middle Eastern petrochemical industry that have a major and direct influence on the global industry should be paid close attention to by companies and organizations either directly or indirectly associated with the petrochemical industry. This report is a comprehensive expansion and update of our well-received publication "Middle Eastern Petrochemical Industry 2006" report. Taking into account the complex economic factors characteristic of the Middle Eastern region, a significant volume of the latest data and original information from the field has been added, and trends in the petrochemical industries of each Middle Eastern country have been compiled and analyzed.

Compared with when the report was published previously, the cost competitiveness of Middle Eastern gas-based petrochemicals has been significantly enhanced on account of sharply higher crude oil prices, and while this has given impetus to a concentrated spurt in terms of project realization, this has also itself led to effects appearing resulting from skyrocketing construction costs.

In addition, moves to diversify product mixes through a shift to naphtha-based petrochemicals are becoming apparent. Furthermore, we have investigated the details of individual projects in order to analyze the status of the so-called "2008 Issue," when numerous plants were scheduled for completion. In the current revision, we have also undertaken a thorough analysis of the status of the plant start-up boom and the overwhelming competitiveness of these plants. Furthermore, we also touch on issues such as project delays due to the effects of the global financial crisis and plummeting crude oil and petrochemical prices since the latter half of the 2008.

The following information is provided in detail in "Middle Eastern Petrochemical Industry 2009."

*Outline, summary, and positioning of the Middle East's petrochemical industry
*Status and outlook of the petrochemical industries of 13 countries in the Middle East:
Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Oman, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Turkey, Egypt, Libya, Algeria, and Bahrain
*Chemical industry administrative organizations, systems, foreign investment incentives, investment, environment, and country risk
*Details of petrochemical enterprises (especially construction of new plants and future plans)
*Production capacities for petrochemical products and balances of petrochemical products in complexes
*Status and outlook of supply and demand for petrochemical products (Middle Eastern and Asian countries)
*Cost competitiveness (effects of feedstock and construction costs; comparison with Asian countries and U.S.)
*Status and prospects of petrochemical feedstocks (especially availabilities of feedstock gases such as
ethane)
*Status of European, American, and Japanese, and other Asian companies' activities in the Middle East

Since the most recent updated report was published in 2006, our research team has spent about three more years undertaking further research and analysis. In addition to extensive experience regarding the Middle Eastern petrochemical industry and information collected through the course of our day-to-day work, we have undertaken numerous field trips to visit government offices, companies, and organizations in Middle Eastern countries, Japan, the U.S., and Europe, and through their cooperation we were able to obtain a large volume of valuable information. We feel sure that this publication on the Middle Eastern petrochemical industry, about which information is generally scarce, will prove to be very useful to you.

We will be happy if this report will help you understand and grasp the trends of the dynamic Middle Eastern petrochemical industry, and assist you in formulating suitable business strategies.
